Having no idea what you’re supposed to do next in a game is a problem. It’s like Myst and Flower had a baby, then that baby grew up and met a pretty little screensaver, and then the two of them gave birth to Hohokum. It’s interesting, whatever it is, and I was always interested to see what it would do next. Hohokum is a collaboration between British game developer Ricky Haggett of Honeyslug Games, visual artist Richard Hogg and Sony Santa Monica.It’s this weird combination of stuff that shouldn’t work but then totally doesĪll of this adds up to a game that certainly shares elements with stuff you’ve played before - developer thatgamecompany’s wind-sim Flower and the classic adventure game Myst come to mind - but it also provides a new experience that’s hard to categorize. There are 17 worlds, each with unique characters and varied goals. The Long Mover changes color depending on the direction it is facing, and this color is matched by the PS4 controller's light bar. The player can control the speed at which the Long Mover travels, as well as initiating a speed-boost. Some objects in the background can be interacted with depending on how the player moves around them. Hohokum is non-linear and has no score, tutorial or fail-state, but there are some objectives that can be completed, many being optional. The laid-back and euphoric soundtrack features music from artists under the record label Ghostly International. The game was inspired by kite flying, London museums, and indigenous cultures. In Hohokum the player controls a snakelike creature, called the Long Mover, exploring whimsical and colorful worlds with no set objective.
